The reason behind the work
Why StatisticsCorner™
Correct fundamentals. Useful tools. Reliable answers.
Statistics has no shortage of excellent textbooks. The trouble is that most of them assume a level of mathematical background that a lot of practitioners simply don't have — and were never going to get, given how most people actually learn this material. In my experience, most practitioners pick up their statistical skills on the job, watching a colleague or a manager work through a problem. That's a reasonable way to learn a tool. It's a much riskier way to learn statistics, because it only works if the person you're emulating is well-grounded to begin with. When they're not, bad practices don't just persist — they get taught forward, quietly becoming the norm on a team or in an industry. And even where a solid textbook does exist, a meaningful amount of the real, working knowledge in this field still lives only in journal articles that never make it into any book.
The Compendium of Statistical Tests grew out of trying to close that gap for one specific problem: the right test for a given situation is scattered across a dozen textbooks, a stack of journal articles, and whatever software documentation happens to be current.
StatisticsCorner™ is the next step. The courses are built to teach the fundamentals correctly the first time, with the tools and understanding to apply them — a small investment against what is otherwise a long career of correcting bad habits. The free resources exist for a simpler reason: to dispel myths around common statistical practices, build awareness of concepts that don't get taught well elsewhere, and give anyone a fast, reliable answer through the calculators, whether or not they ever pay for anything here.
Paid or not, the goal is that everyone who visits finds something genuinely useful — in a small way, a service to the statistical community this book and this site both come out of.
